Adobe Illustrator 2026
The vector drawing application that most print and identity work still runs through.
The page layout application behind most books, magazines, and catalogues in print, with the full typography engine, long document tools, and print-ready export.
Overview
InDesign is where long documents are actually built. Master pages, paragraph and character styles, threaded text frames, and a typographic engine that handles optical margin alignment and proper hyphenation are the tools that separate a designed book from a word processor document with pictures in it.
For anything longer than a few pages, the style system is the whole argument. Change a paragraph style once and four hundred pages update, including the table of contents, the running headers, and the index. Nothing else in the category handles a document of that length without complaint.
Print output is where the program earns its position. Preflight catches missing links, low resolution images, and colour space problems before a file leaves the building, and the PDF export presets produce files that a commercial printer accepts without a conversation about it.
Digital output is also covered. Reflowable EPUB, fixed layout EPUB, and interactive PDF export are built in, along with the publish tools for producing an online version of a layout.
