BLUESYSTEM

OBS Studio

The broadcast and capture tool that the entire streaming world standardised on, packaged with the common plugin set already in place so the scene tree is useful from the first launch.

Version 32.2.1 148 MB Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) Updated 4 days ago

Overview

What this release is

OBS won by being the tool that does not decide anything for you. Everything on screen is a source, sources go into scenes, scenes get switched, and the output goes wherever you point it. That model sounds abstract until the first time you need a camera, a game, a browser overlay, and three audio devices in one layout, at which point nothing else comes close.

The audio handling is the part people underestimate. Every source gets its own channel with independent monitoring, filters, and routing, so a microphone can have a noise gate and compressor while system audio stays clean, and the whole mix can be sent to separate tracks in the recording for fixing later. Nothing else free gets close to this.

Capture is broad and reliable. Game capture hooks the running process, window capture works on applications that block the older method, display capture handles multiple monitors and mixed refresh rates, and camera sources support most capture cards without a vendor driver. Hardware encoding is available on every current graphics vendor.

This package includes the plugin set that most people install within an hour anyway, covering advanced scene switching, virtual camera improvements, audio filters, and the source mirroring tools, so the first launch already has the pieces a real layout needs.

Feature set

What you get

Scene and source model

Layer any number of captures, cameras, images, and browser sources per scene and switch between them instantly.

Per source audio

Independent filters, monitoring, and routing on every audio channel, with multi track recording for later repair.

Capture coverage

Game, window, display, camera, and capture card sources that work across mixed refresh rates and multiple monitors.

Hardware encoding

Encoder support on every current graphics vendor, which keeps the processor free during a long stream.

Plugin set included

Advanced scene switching, virtual camera improvements, and audio filters bundled instead of hunted down separately.

Replay buffer

Keeps a rolling window in memory so the last stretch can be saved after something worth keeping has already happened.

Changes in this build

What changed

  • Updated encoder support for the current generation of graphics hardware
  • Improved capture reliability on applications using the newest presentation model
  • Rebuilt audio filter chain with lower latency on monitored sources
  • Scene collection import and export made more tolerant of missing sources
  • Fixed the crash when a capture card was removed while a scene using it was active

Installation

How to install it

  1. Close any running capture software before installing, since two hooks on the same process will fight.
  2. Extract the archive and run the installer as administrator.
  3. Run the auto configuration wizard on first launch to set a sensible bitrate and resolution for your connection.
  4. Set the recording path to a fast drive rather than the system disk before the first long session.
  5. Add sources one at a time and check levels in the mixer before recording anything that matters.

Questions

Before you start

Are the bundled plugins required?

No. They can be removed from the plugin folder if you prefer a bare install, and the program will start normally without them.

Why does game capture show a black screen?

Usually an elevation mismatch. Run the program as administrator so it can hook a process running at the same level.

Can it record and stream at the same time?

Yes, with separate quality settings for each output if the hardware can carry both encodes.

Does the virtual camera work in meeting software?

Yes. It registers as a standard camera device and appears in the source list of most conferencing applications.
