The Foundry Nuke Studio

The node based compositor that most feature film visual effects pass through, in the Studio configuration that adds the conform timeline and review tools on top of the full compositing core.

Version 17.0v4 1.86 GB Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) Updated 1 week ago

Overview

What this release is

Nuke is the compositor that finishing work in film and high end television is built on, and the reason is the node graph. Every operation is a node, every node can be inspected, and the whole tree can be restructured at any point without rebuilding the work. Layer based compositors force decisions early. A node graph lets a shot be reorganised after the fact, which is exactly what happens when a supervisor changes their mind at the end of a schedule.

The deep compositing and 3D systems are what separate it from lighter tools. Deep image data holds per pixel depth samples so elements can be merged in true depth order without holdout mattes, which makes atmospheric work and heavy layered environments practical. The 3D system imports geometry and camera data, projects footage onto it, and renders back into the comp using the same scanline or ray traced path the rest of the pipeline expects.

The Studio configuration adds the parts that turn a shot tool into a sequence tool. A conform timeline reads an edit list, links it to the source media, and lets whole sequences be reviewed, versioned, and pushed back into comps as individual shots. Playback runs at full rate with caching, and annotations made during review carry through to the artist.

This build includes the full compositing core, the deep and 3D systems, the particle and camera tracking tools, and the Python scripting environment that pipelines are usually built around. Node limits and the watermarked output of the restricted editions do not apply here.

Feature set

What you get

Node graph

Every operation is an inspectable node, so a shot can be restructured late in the schedule without rebuilding the work.

Deep compositing

Per pixel depth samples merge elements in true depth order, removing the need for holdout mattes in dense environments.

3D system

Geometry and camera import, camera projection, and rendering back into the comp through scanline or ray traced paths.

Camera tracking

Solves camera motion from the plate and produces a point cloud for placing 3D elements accurately.

Conform timeline

Reads an edit list, links source media, and pushes individual shots into comps while keeping the sequence view live.

Python pipeline

Full scripting environment for building custom tools, batch operations, and studio pipeline integration.

Changes in this build

What changed

  • Viewer caching rebuilt for faster playback on long comps with heavy nodes
  • Deep merge performance improved on shots with very high sample counts
  • Camera tracker solve accuracy raised on plates with limited parallax
  • Conform timeline gained faster media relinking on large sequences
  • Fixed the render stall triggered by certain nested group node structures

Installation

How to install it

  1. Disable real time protection before extracting, since the licensing component is replaced during setup.
  2. Extract to a short path on a drive with at least 8 GB free.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and complete it fully before opening the application.
  4. Do not install a licence server. This build does not query one and adding it causes a long timeout on launch.
  5. Set the cache folder to a fast drive under preferences before starting any real work, since the default location is small.

Hardware

System requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD, 64-bit, eight cores or more strongly recommended
Memory16 GB minimum, 64 GB recommended for deep and 3D work
Graphics4 GB VRAM minimum, 8 GB or more for the ray traced renderer
Storage12 GB install plus a fast dedicated cache drive
Display1920 x 1080, calibrated reference monitor recommended
SystemWindows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11

Questions

Before you start

Which edition does this install?

The Studio configuration, which includes everything in the standard and extended feature sets plus the conform timeline and review tools.

Is output watermarked?

No. Renders come out clean at any resolution and there is no node count restriction.

Do scripts from other studios load?

Standard Python and gizmo files load normally. Anything depending on a proprietary pipeline module will need that module present.

Why does the first launch take a while?

It compiles its plugin cache and scans the node library. Later launches are much quicker.
