Overview

What this release is

Windows 7 refuses to go away because a great deal of hardware and software was built for it and never moved. Industrial controllers, laboratory instruments, point of sale systems, and older creative applications frequently run on nothing else, and for those machines a clean, stable 7 installation is not nostalgia, it is a requirement.

This image is the Service Pack 1 release rolled up to the final servicing level, so the long chain of updates that a fresh 7 installation used to demand is already applied. Apart from that rollup and the activation step, nothing has been added, removed, or modified. It is a standard installation rather than a stripped one.

The Professional edition is the sensible target. It includes Remote Desktop host, the backup tools, the ability to join a domain, and the XP compatibility mode that keeps genuinely old software running. Those features are the reason to install Professional rather than Home even on a standalone machine.

The ISO is bootable on x64 hardware and can be written to a USB stick or a disc with any standard imaging tool. Both UEFI and legacy BIOS boot paths are present, which matters because the machines that need Windows 7 are often old enough that the boot mode is not a given.

Installation

How to install it

Write the ISO to a USB stick of 8 GB or larger, or burn it to a dual layer disc.
Back up everything on the target drive. A clean installation removes all existing partitions on it.
Boot from the media, choose your language, and select Custom installation rather than Upgrade.
Complete the setup, then run the included activation step from the desktop.
Confirm the state in system properties and let the remaining updates install.

Does it still receive updates?

The final available updates are rolled into the image. No new updates are issued, so keep it off untrusted networks.

Can it run modern software?

Some, but a great deal of current software now requires a newer release. Check the requirements before relying on it.

How do I install on very old hardware?
