Overview
Dimension exists for the designer who needs a photographic looking product image and does not want to learn a full 3D package to get one. You place a model, wrap your artwork onto it, choose materials, set up lighting, and render. The entire workflow is built around that one job, and because it is not trying to be a general 3D application, it is learnable in an afternoon.
The artwork wrapping is the centre of it. A flat label design, a box net, or a printed panel drops onto the corresponding surface of a model and follows its geometry, including curved bottles and creased cartons. When the artwork changes in the design application, the placed graphic updates rather than needing to be reapplied, so a dozen label variations become a dozen renders rather than a dozen setups.
Lighting is where it does something genuinely clever. Give it a background photograph and it analyses that image to work out where the light was coming from, then lights the 3D object to match, including the shadow direction and the reflected colour from the environment. A product placed on a photographed table looks like it was there, which is the whole point.
The material system covers the surfaces that product work actually needs. Coated and uncoated papers, metals with correct anisotropic reflection, glass with proper refraction, plastics, fabrics, and the metallic and spot varnish finishes used in packaging. Materials are parameterised rather than fixed, so a substrate can be tuned rather than swapped.
Rendering runs on the processor or the graphics adapter, with a live preview that refines continuously while you work rather than making you commit to a final render to see the result. Output includes the render passes separately, so the image can be adjusted afterwards in a raster editor without re-rendering.
