Overview

What this release is

SolidWorks is the mechanical design standard for products that get manufactured. Parts are modelled as a history of features, assemblies are built from mates that hold as components change, and drawings are generated from the model with dimensions that stay linked to the geometry they measure.

Premium is the top configuration and the reason to install this rather than a lower tier. It adds the simulation package for stress, displacement, and factor of safety studies, routing for pipe, tube, and electrical harnesses, and the full motion analysis toolset. For anyone doing design validation rather than just modelling, these are the tools that matter.

The Toolbox library is the quiet time saver. Every standard fastener, bearing, and structural profile is parametric and correctly sized, so an assembly can be populated with real hardware in minutes instead of modelled from a catalogue by hand.

Sheet metal and weldment environments cover fabrication work end to end, producing flat patterns with correct bend allowances and cut lists that come straight from the model. Drawing output includes the tolerancing and annotation standards a shop expects.

Installation

How to install it

Free at least 60 GB. The installer needs a great deal of temporary space during the unpack stage.
Disable real time protection and extract to a short path.
Run the installation manager as administrator and choose the Premium product set.
Set the Toolbox location to a local folder unless you are sharing it across a team.
Apply the included licensing step before the first launch, then start the program.

Before you start

Will consumer graphics cards work?

They run the program, but display artefacts in shaded edge modes are common. A certified card avoids them.

Can files from older versions be opened?

Yes, and they upgrade on open. Saving makes them unreadable to older versions, so keep copies.

Is simulation included?

Yes. Stress, displacement, and motion studies are part of the Premium configuration.

Why does the installer take so long?

It unpacks and stages more than thirty gigabytes before installation begins. An SSD makes a large difference.
