Adobe Photoshop Neural Filters

The complete offline filter model set for the 2023 generation of the editor, so every neural filter runs locally on the machine instead of streaming its work to a server.

Version 2023.1.4 3.42 GB Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) Updated 1 week ago

Overview

What this release is

The neural filter panel in the 2023 generation of the editor lists a good many filters, and most of them show a download arrow rather than a slider until the models have been fetched. On a machine that is deliberately kept off the network, or one where the download simply refuses to complete, that panel is a list of things you cannot use. This package is the models themselves, placed on disk so every filter opens ready to run.

What that unlocks is the whole set. Skin smoothing that keeps texture, portrait adjustment that changes expression, age, and gaze direction on a face, colour transfer that maps the palette of one image onto another, colourisation of black and white photographs, depth blur that builds a depth estimate and applies a physically plausible defocus, and super zoom that enlarges a crop while reconstructing detail.

Restoration is the group that gets used most in practice. Photo restoration cleans scratches, dust, tears, and the general degradation of an old print, and the scratch reduction pass can be run separately at a controlled strength. Combined with colourisation, a damaged monochrome print becomes something presentable in a few minutes rather than a long evening with a clone stamp.

Every filter outputs to a new layer or a smart filter rather than committing to the pixels, so the result can be masked, blended, and reduced in opacity like any other adjustment. That is what makes them usable in real retouching, where the full strength result is almost never what you want.

The package is the model set only. The editor itself must already be installed from the matching generation, and the models are placed into the folder its filter panel reads from.

Feature set

What you get

Offline models

The filter weights placed on disk, so nothing needs to be fetched before a filter can be opened.

Complete filter set

Skin smoothing, portrait adjustment, colour transfer, colourisation, depth blur, super zoom, and the restoration group.

Photo restoration

Cleans scratches, dust, and tears from scanned prints, with the scratch pass available separately at a controlled strength.

Colourisation

Adds plausible colour to monochrome images, with the ability to steer specific regions by hand afterwards.

Depth blur

Builds a depth estimate from a single image and applies a defocus that respects it rather than a flat blur.

Non destructive output

Results land on a new layer or as a smart filter, so they can be masked, blended, and reduced like any other adjustment.

Changes in this build

What changed

  • Model set completed with the filters that previously had to be fetched individually
  • Improved colourisation accuracy on skin tones and on vegetation
  • Depth blur estimation refined around hair and thin foreground objects
  • Faster processing on graphics hardware with more available memory
  • Fixed the filter panel showing a download prompt after the editor was updated within the same generation

Installation

How to install it

  1. Install the matching generation of the editor first. This package is models only and does nothing on its own.
  2. Close the editor completely before extracting anything.
  3. Extract the archive and copy the model folders into the location described in the included notes.
  4. Open the editor, then the neural filter panel, and confirm the filters show sliders rather than download arrows.
  5. Block the editor in your firewall if you want the panel to stop checking for newer model versions.

Questions

Before you start

Does this work without the editor installed?

No. It is a model set for the filter panel and needs the matching generation of the editor already present.

Will it work with a newer generation of the editor?

Only the generation it was built for. Later versions use a different model layout and will ignore these.

Do the filters run without a connection?

Yes, once the models are in place, which is the reason to install this at all.

Why is a filter greyed out entirely?

The graphics card does not meet the memory requirement for that filter. Reduce the document size or use a card with more memory.
