Autodesk AutoCAD 2027
The drafting application that the DWG format was built around.
The civil engineering toolset built on the full AutoCAD engine, handling surfaces, corridors, alignments, pipe networks, and earthwork quantities as connected model objects rather than as drawn lines.
Overview
Civil 3D is the complete AutoCAD application with a civil engineering toolset built onto it, and the difference from plain drafting is that the drawing is a model. A surface is a real triangulated surface rather than a set of contour lines, an alignment carries stationing and geometry rules, and a corridor is generated from the two of them rather than drawn to look like one.
That model relationship is what makes the tool worth its considerable learning curve. Change a design alignment and every profile, every cross section, every corridor solid, and every earthwork quantity that depends on it updates without anyone editing them individually. On a project where the alignment moves four times before approval, this is the difference between a schedule that holds and one that does not.
Surfaces are built from survey point clouds, contours, breaklines, or imported data, with editing tools for the inevitable bad points and the ability to compare two surfaces to produce a cut and fill volume directly. Grading objects produce finished ground surfaces from a feature line and a slope rule, so a pad or a pond is defined by its intent rather than by hand drawn contours.
Pipe networks handle gravity and pressure systems with real part catalogues, rule based layout that enforces cover and slope, hydraulic analysis handoff, and profile views that show the pipe run against the surface with every crossing and conflict marked. Structures and pipes carry their own data, so a network schedule is generated rather than typed.
Documentation follows the model. Plan and profile sheets generate along an alignment with matching viewports, section views cut at defined intervals, and every label is a dynamic object that updates when the geometry beneath it changes.
Feature set
Surfaces, alignments, profiles, and corridors as connected objects, so a change to one updates everything downstream.
Built from points, contours, breaklines, or imported survey data, with direct cut and fill volume comparison between two surfaces.
Generated from alignments, profiles, and assemblies, producing solids, surfaces, and quantities in one operation.
Gravity and pressure systems with real part catalogues, rule based layout, and conflict marking in profile views.
Finished ground defined by feature lines and slope rules rather than by hand drawn contours.
Plan and profile sheets, section views, and labels that regenerate when the model changes beneath them.

Questions
Yes. This is the full application with the civil toolset added, so ordinary drafting works exactly as it does in the base program.
Yes, by exporting to a plain drawing, which flattens the model objects into geometry. Keep the original for further design work.
The one matching your local standards, which sets the styles, labels, and units. Changing it later on an existing project is awkward.
Frequency and region count. Increase the sampling interval while designing and tighten it only for final quantities.
