Chaos V-Ray for SketchUp

The photoreal rendering engine that plugs straight into SketchUp, turning a working model into a finished image with real materials, real lighting, and the interactive preview that makes look development a matter of minutes.

Version 7.40.02 2.18 GB Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) Updated 6 days ago

Overview

What this release is

V-Ray is the renderer that made photoreal output normal in architecture and product visualisation, and this is the version that lives inside SketchUp rather than in a separate application. It adds a toolbar, a material system, and a render engine to a program known for fast massing models, which turns SketchUp into something that can produce a presentation image rather than only a study.

The interactive renderer is the feature that changes the workflow. A preview window updates continuously as materials, lights, and the camera are adjusted, so look development happens by eye rather than by rendering, waiting, and guessing again. On a capable machine the feedback is close to immediate.

The material and light set is what carries the realism. Physically based materials with real reflection and refraction, a sun and sky system that matches a location and time, and light sources that behave like their real counterparts mean a scene reaches a believable result without hand-tuning every value.

This build installs the full plugin with the material library and the Chaos Cosmos asset browser hooks, and applies its licensing before first launch so it opens ready inside SketchUp without an online sign in.

Feature set

What you get

Interactive rendering

A live preview updates as you change materials, lights, and the camera, so look development is done by eye.

Physical materials

Reflection, refraction, and coat layers that behave like real surfaces without hand-tuned values.

Sun and sky

A physical daylight system that matches a location and time for accurate architectural lighting.

Light types

Area, dome, sphere, and IES lights that behave like their real counterparts.

GPU and CPU

Render on the processor, the graphics card, or both together depending on the hardware available.

Material library

A bundled library of ready surfaces to drop onto a model and adjust rather than build from scratch.

Changes in this build

What changed

  • Faster interactive preview convergence on interior scenes
  • Improved denoiser handling of fine geometry at the frame edge
  • Expanded the bundled material library
  • Better memory handling on GPU rendering with large textures
  • Fixed the material assignment loss when a component is reloaded in SketchUp

Installation

How to install it

  1. Install a supported SketchUp version first. The plugin attaches to it rather than standing alone.
  2. Disable real time protection and extract to a short path.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and let it detect the SketchUp installation.
  4. Apply the included licensing step before opening SketchUp.
  5. Start SketchUp and confirm the V-Ray toolbar appears without a sign in prompt.

Questions

Before you start

Which SketchUp versions does it attach to?

The recent releases. Install SketchUp first and the plugin detects a supported version during setup.

Does it need a graphics card?

GPU rendering does. CPU rendering works without one, more slowly, on any capable processor.

Why is the interactive preview slow?

Heavy geometry or very large textures. Lower the preview resolution while developing the look and render final at full size.

Are the materials included?

Yes. The bundled library installs with the plugin. Cosmos assets that stream will still fetch on demand.
