Adobe Illustrator 2026
The vector drawing application that most print and identity work still runs through.
The drawing and comic production application built around a pen engine that behaves like a real nib, with the multi page and animation tools that only exist at the EX tier.
Overview
The reason illustrators move to this program and stay is the line. The brush engine responds to pressure and tilt in a way that produces a stroke with a real taper and real weight variation, and the vector layers let a line be redrawn, thinned, or thickened after the fact without redrawing the artwork underneath it.
The comic tools are unmatched anywhere else. Panel dividers that split a page into frames with correct gutters, speech balloons with tails that follow the character, screen tones with proper halftone patterns rather than grey fills, and perspective rulers that snap every stroke to a vanishing point without constraining the pen.
The EX tier is what makes the difference for production work. Multi page project management for an entire book with page order, story information, and batch export, along with the animation timeline that is not limited to a short frame count the way the lower tier is.
The three dimensional reference figures deserve a mention. Pose a model, set the camera, and draw over it, with the model rendering as a guide layer rather than as part of the artwork. For difficult foreshortening it removes a great deal of guesswork.
