Overview
ETABS is written specifically for buildings rather than for structures in general, and every part of the interface reflects that. The model is organised by storey, framing is drawn on plans that understand what a floor level is, and repeated levels are defined once and applied through the height. On a twenty storey tower this saves days of modelling compared with a general purpose analysis package.
The analysis capability underneath is anything but simplified. Nonlinear behaviour, staged construction sequencing, response spectrum and time history dynamic analysis, buckling, and the performance based pushover procedures are all present, with the solver built to handle the very large element counts a full building model generates.
Seismic work is where the package is strongest. Automatic lateral load generation follows the major codes, diaphragm behaviour is modelled correctly rather than assumed, storey drift and irregularity checks are computed automatically, and the results present in the form that a review authority expects to see them. Wind load generation follows the same pattern.
Design runs from the same model rather than from an export. Steel members are sized and checked, concrete beams and columns are designed with reinforcement detailing, shear walls are handled with proper boundary element checks, and composite floor systems are designed with the framing. Foundation loads are extracted directly for the substructure design.
Output includes detailed calculation reports showing the intermediate values, drawing production for the designed members, and export to the detailing and documentation formats that the rest of the project runs on. This build installs the complete Ultimate configuration with every design code and every analysis module enabled.
