Overview
CATIA is the package that defines how complex surfaces are built. The class A surfacing workbenches produce the continuous, reflection clean geometry that car bodies and aircraft skins require, and no competing product has quite matched them for that specific job. If a surface has to survive a highlight sweep without a visible break, this is where it gets made.
The workbench structure is the part newcomers struggle with. Rather than one modelling environment, the application is divided into dozens of specialised workspaces covering part design, assembly, generative shape design, sheet metal, composites, kinematics, drafting, and analysis, each with its own toolbars and its own way of thinking. Learning the two or three you need is the practical route in.
The P3 configuration is the widest one, which is why it is the version usually shared. It includes the advanced surfacing and analysis workbenches that the smaller configurations leave out, along with the knowledgeware tools for driving geometry from rules and parameters instead of from direct edits.
This build installs standalone with no licence manager to configure, which is normally the largest obstacle to running the software on a machine that is not attached to a corporate network.
