Firefly AI Support for Photoshop

The support package that switches the generative model family back on inside an existing Photoshop installation, restoring generative fill, expand, and the text prompt bar on builds where those panels open greyed out.

Version 25.0.0.2265 1.12 GB Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) Updated 3 days ago

Overview

What this release is

This is not a standalone editor. It is the support layer that Photoshop looks for when it draws the generative controls in the Contextual Task Bar, and it exists because a large number of installations end up with those controls present but permanently dimmed. Dropping this package in place restores generative fill, generative expand, and the prompt field without touching anything else about the host application.

The component set covers the model interfaces, the prompt handling, the reference image pipeline, and the local cache that keeps recent results available for stepping back through. Once installed, a generative operation behaves exactly as it does on a fully provisioned machine, arriving as a live layer with its own mask rather than baking straight into pixels.

The package targets Photoshop 2025 and 2026 builds. Older releases used a different plugin host and will not pick the components up, which is the single most common reason people report that nothing changed after installing. Checking the host version first saves a great deal of time.

Everything here runs beside the host program rather than replacing any of its files. If you decide to remove it later, the folder can simply be deleted and Photoshop returns to the state it was in beforehand, with the generative controls dimmed again but nothing else altered.

Feature set

What you get

Generative fill

Restores the fill and expand controls in the Contextual Task Bar, producing results on their own editable layer with a mask.

Prompt bar

The text field, model picker, and variation carousel all become active rather than showing as unavailable.

Reference images

Supports the style and composition reference workflow, so a prompt can be anchored to an existing image.

Result cache

Recent generations stay locally available so variations can be revisited without regenerating them.

Host safe

Installs beside Photoshop instead of replacing its binaries, so the host application stays exactly as it was.

Version aware

Detects the installed Photoshop build and places the components in the correct plugin host directory automatically.

Changes in this build

What changed

  • Added detection for the 2026 plugin host layout
  • Reference image handling extended to composition as well as style
  • Local result cache now prunes itself instead of growing without limit
  • Improved handling of very large selections during generative expand
  • Fixed the greyed out prompt field on installations upgraded in place

Installation

How to install it

  1. Close Photoshop completely before starting. The installer cannot place files while the host has them open.
  2. Turn off real time protection for the extraction step and extract to a short path such as C:\Setup.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and let it detect the installed Photoshop build.
  4. If detection fails, point it at the Photoshop program folder manually rather than at the Creative Cloud folder.
  5. Open Photoshop and confirm the prompt field in the Contextual Task Bar is active rather than dimmed.

Questions

Before you start

Does this work without Photoshop installed?

No. It is a support layer for the host application and does nothing on its own.

Will it work on Photoshop 2024 or older?

No. Those builds use a different plugin host and will not load these components.

Does a generative operation still need a connection?

Yes. The interfaces are local but the model itself responds over the network, so generative actions need connectivity.

How do I remove it?

Delete the folder it installed into. Photoshop reverts to its previous behaviour on the next launch.
