MathWorks MATLAB R2025b

The technical computing environment engineers and researchers write their analysis in, in the R2025b release with a broad set of the toolboxes bundled, so the language, the desktop, and the add-ons install as one package.

Version 25.2.0.2998904 12.9 GB Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) Updated 1 week ago

Overview

What this release is

MATLAB is where a great deal of engineering and research thinking actually gets done. It pairs a matrix-first language with a desktop built for exploring data, so an idea can go from a rough calculation to a plotted result to a validated model without leaving the environment. For anyone whose work involves signals, control systems, statistics, or numerical methods, it is the tool the field is written in.

The strength has always been the toolbox ecosystem. This package bundles a broad selection of them rather than the bare language, covering signal and image processing, control systems, optimisation, statistics and machine learning, and the symbolic maths engine, so most workflows are covered without hunting down a separate add-on install.

Simulink is included for anyone modelling dynamic systems as block diagrams rather than as code. It shares the same engine, so a model can call into scripts and a script can drive a simulation, which is how control and signal work is usually built here.

This is a large installation because it is the full environment with its toolbox set. It installs offline once unpacked, and the licensing step is applied before first launch rather than through an online account.

Feature set

What you get

Matrix language

A language built around matrices and vectors, so numerical work reads close to the maths it implements.

Toolbox set

Signal, image, control, optimisation, statistics, and symbolic toolboxes bundled rather than fetched separately.

Desktop environment

An editor, workspace browser, and live plotting built for exploring data as you work.

Simulink

Model dynamic systems as block diagrams that share the engine with the scripting language.

Live scripts

Combine code, formatted text, and output in one document for readable, reproducible analysis.

App designer

Build interactive tools around your code without leaving the environment.

Changes in this build

What changed

  • R2025b release with the current toolbox revisions bundled
  • Faster startup on machines with a large installed toolbox set
  • Improved live script rendering on high resolution displays
  • Updated the machine learning toolbox with current model types
  • Fixed the installer stall on drives with an unusual sector size

Installation

How to install it

  1. Free at least 30 GB. The unpack stage needs a great deal of temporary space before installation begins.
  2. Disable real time protection and extract to a short path.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and select the toolboxes you actually need to save space.
  4. Apply the included licensing step before the first launch.
  5. Start MATLAB and confirm the command window opens without an account prompt.

Questions

Before you start

Do I need all the toolboxes?

No. Select only the ones your work uses. The full set is large and most of it will sit unused.

Is Simulink included?

Yes, along with a broad toolbox selection. It shares the engine with the scripting language.

Does it need a licence server?

Not in this configuration. The included step handles the licence state locally.

Why is the download so large?

The bundled toolboxes make up most of it. A leaner install is possible by deselecting the ones you do not need.
