Proteus Professional

Schematic capture, mixed mode simulation, microcontroller firmware debugging, and PCB layout in one environment, with the full component libraries and every simulation model unlocked.

Version 9.1 SP2 1.12 GB Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) Updated 2 weeks ago

Overview

What this release is

What separates Proteus from other electronics packages is that the simulator understands firmware. A microcontroller placed on the schematic can be loaded with a compiled hex file and run, with the surrounding analogue and digital circuit simulated at the same time. Press a button on the virtual board and the code responds, the display updates, and the oscilloscope trace changes, all before any hardware exists.

The schematic capture side is conventional in the best sense, with a huge bundled component library, hierarchical sheets for larger designs, and proper design rule checking against the netlist before anything reaches layout. Buses, off page connectors, and multi part packages all behave the way an engineer expects, and annotation is handled automatically across sheets.

Layout is a full PCB editor rather than an afterthought. Autorouting is available but the manual routing tools are good enough that most people use them, with push and shove behaviour, length matching for differential pairs, and copper pour that recalculates as tracks move. Output covers the standard manufacturing files plus a 3D view of the finished board with component models placed on it, which catches mechanical clearance problems early.

This build includes the professional level libraries, the full simulation model set covering the popular microcontroller families and peripheral devices, and the advanced simulation features such as graph based analysis, frequency sweeps, and noise analysis. The board size limit and the model restrictions present in the demonstration version do not apply.

Feature set

What you get

Firmware simulation

Load a compiled hex file onto a simulated microcontroller and watch the code drive the surrounding circuit in real time.

Mixed mode simulator

Analogue and digital simulation in the same schematic, with graph based analysis, sweeps, and noise study.

Component libraries

Very large bundled library covering discrete parts, peripheral devices, displays, and the common microcontroller families.

PCB layout

Full board editor with push and shove routing, length matching, dynamic copper pour, and standard manufacturing output.

3D board view

Renders the assembled board with component models placed, so mechanical clearance issues surface before fabrication.

Virtual instruments

Oscilloscope, logic analyser, pattern generator, and protocol analysers wired straight onto the schematic.

Changes in this build

What changed

  • Additional microcontroller variants added to the simulation model set
  • Router improved on high density boards with fine pitch packages
  • 3D viewer performance raised considerably on boards with many placed models
  • Design rule checking now reports clearance violations with a clickable trace back to the net
  • Fixed the simulation stall on schematics with deeply nested hierarchical sheets

Installation

How to install it

  1. Disable real time protection before extracting, since the licence manager component is patched.
  2. Extract to a short path such as C:\Setup on a drive with at least 4 GB free.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and install the licence manager component when offered.
  4. Install to the default location so the library paths written into the registry resolve correctly.
  5. Do not run any update check on first launch. The libraries in the package are already complete.

Hardware

System requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD, 64-bit, quad core recommended for large simulations

Questions

Before you start

Is the board size limited in this build?

No. The professional level limits are removed, so board size and component count are unrestricted.

Which compilers work with the firmware simulation?

Any toolchain that produces a standard hex or elf output. Several popular compilers can also be driven from inside the environment.

Are the simulation models all included?

The professional model set ships with the package. Vendor supplied spice models can be imported alongside them.

Do older design files open?

Yes. Designs from previous versions convert on open, and the original file is left untouched.
