Topaz Sharpen AI

Corrective sharpening that separates camera shake, focus error, and general softness into different models, recovering detail that conventional sharpening only makes worse.

Version 4.1.0 1.34 GB Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) Updated 3 weeks ago

Overview

What this release is

Conventional sharpening does one thing, which is raise local contrast at edges. It cannot recover detail that was never resolved, and on a genuinely blurred frame it produces halos and crunch instead of clarity. This tool works differently, using trained models that reconstruct what the detail probably looked like based on what remains, which is why it can rescue frames that any normal sharpening pass would ruin.

The three model types matter because the three problems are different. Motion blur from a slow shutter smears detail directionally and needs a directional reconstruction. Focus error softens uniformly and needs a different approach entirely. General softness from a weak lens or a small aperture diffraction limit is a third case again. Picking the right one is the single biggest factor in the result, and the automatic detection is right most of the time.

Control is more granular than the simplicity of the interface suggests. Sharpening strength and detail recovery are separate sliders, masking allows the effect to be confined to a subject while leaving background bokeh untouched, and the comparison view shows up to four variations side by side at full resolution so the choice is made on evidence rather than on a thumbnail.

It runs as a standalone application and as a plugin for the common host editors, so a frame can be sent out from a layered document, processed, and returned as a new layer without leaving the main edit. Batch processing handles whole folders with a single model choice, which is the usual approach for a shoot where the same problem affects every frame.

Feature set

What you get

Model types

Separate reconstruction models for motion blur, focus error, and general softness, with automatic detection of which applies.

Detail recovery

Rebuilds plausible fine detail rather than raising edge contrast, avoiding the halos conventional sharpening produces.

Subject masking

Confine the effect to a subject so background blur stays smooth instead of being sharpened into noise.

Comparison view

Up to four processed variations shown side by side at full resolution before committing to one.

Batch processing

Apply a chosen model across an entire folder, which suits a shoot where every frame shares the same problem.

Host integration

Runs standalone or as a plugin, returning the processed frame as a new layer in the host document.

Changes in this build

What changed

  • Processing speed improved substantially on recent GPU hardware
  • Motion blur model retrained for better results on handheld low light frames
  • Masking tools gained a subject detection button for faster setup
  • Batch queue now retains per file model overrides
  • Fixed the plugin return that flattened the layer stack in certain host versions

Installation

How to install it

  1. Disable real time protection before extracting, since the licence component is replaced.
  2. Extract to a short path on a drive with at least 4 GB free.
  3. Run setup as administrator and let it finish installing the model files, which is the slow part.
  4. Install the plugin bridge during setup if you want the host editor integration.
  5. Skip the account prompt on launch and block the executable in the firewall so the state holds.

Hardware

System requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD, 64-bit, with AVX2 support
Memory8 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended for large raw files
Graphics4 GB VRAM strongly recommended, processing falls back to CPU and is far slower without it
Storage5 GB free space for the application and model files
Display1920 x 1080, colour calibrated panel recommended
SystemWindows 10 version 21H2 or newer, Windows 11 supported

Questions

Before you start

Are the model files included?

Yes. Everything is in the package, so nothing streams down on first run.

Does it work without a dedicated GPU?

It does, but processing on the processor alone takes many times longer per frame.

Can it fix a completely out of focus shot?

No. It recovers detail that is partially present. A frame with nothing resolved has nothing to reconstruct from.

Which hosts does the plugin support?

The common layered editors and raw workflow applications. The bridge is installed during setup if selected.
