BLUESYSTEM

uTorrent

The small torrent client that most people still reach for, in a cleaned build with the offer bundles, banner panels, and sponsored torrent feed removed from the package before it was repacked.

Version 3.6.0 6.4 MB Windows 10 / 11 (32-bit and 64-bit) Updated 6 days ago

Overview

What this release is

The reason this client has survived every attempt to replace it is size. The executable is a few megabytes, it starts instantly, it holds thousands of torrents in a list without complaining, and it will run on hardware old enough that heavier clients simply refuse. Nothing about the protocol needs a large program, and this one never forgot that.

What made people leave was everything bolted on after the fact. The bundled offers during setup, the advertisement panel across the bottom, the sponsored content feed, and the featured torrent list were all added long after the client was already good. Those components are removed here, leaving the transfer engine, the queue, and the settings panel.

The engine itself remains capable. Per torrent bandwidth limits, scheduling by hour, encrypted peer connections, magnet handling, sequential download for previewing media, and RSS feeds with filter rules are all present, along with the web interface for controlling the client from another machine.

This is the classic branch rather than the rebuilt web based client, which matters because the classic branch is the one that stays small, keeps the settings tree intact, and does not require a background service to be running before the window will open.

Feature set

What you get

Tiny footprint

A few megabytes on disk and a launch that finishes before the window has finished drawing.

No bundled extras

Offer screens, banner panels, and the sponsored feed removed from the package rather than hidden in settings.

Full settings tree

The complete advanced settings list is exposed, including cache tuning and connection limits.

Scheduling

Bandwidth limits by hour of the week so transfers slow down while the connection is needed for other things.

RSS with rules

Subscribe to a feed and filter by pattern, quality, and episode so new items queue automatically.

Remote control

Web interface for driving the client from a browser on another machine on the network.

Changes in this build

What changed

  • Repacked from the current classic branch release
  • Removed the sponsored torrent feed and the featured content pane
  • Setup no longer offers third party software at any step
  • Improved handling of very large torrents with more than fifty thousand files
  • Fixed the tracker timeout that left transfers stalled after a network change

Installation

How to install it

  1. Uninstall any previous client and keep a copy of the settings file if you want your existing queue back.
  2. Extract the archive and run the executable as administrator on first launch so the association is registered.
  3. Set the download folder and the incomplete folder before adding anything to the queue.
  4. Enable protocol encryption in the connection settings if your connection shapes peer traffic.
  5. Turn off the update check so the cleaned build is not replaced by a stock one.

Questions

Before you start

How is this different from the Pro build?

Pro adds media conversion, a built in player, and a scanning step. This is the standard client with the advertising components removed.

Does it still support magnet links?

Yes, and it registers the handler on first launch when run as administrator.

Can it run without a window?

Yes. Minimise to tray and drive it from the web interface if you prefer to keep the desktop clear.

Will settings from an older install carry over?

Yes, if you keep the settings file from the previous application data folder and drop it in before first launch.
