Overview

What this release is

This is Windows 10 with a great deal taken out. The bundled apps, the telemetry services, the search indexer, and the various background components that a modest machine spends its scarce resources on have been removed, leaving a build that boots quickly, sits on far less disk, and keeps memory free for the work at hand. On an old laptop or a low powered box, the difference is felt immediately.

The target is hardware that struggles with the standard image. A machine with a slow drive and limited memory that crawls under a normal Windows 10 installation runs usably under this one, because the things competing for its resources are simply not there. It is the build to reach for when the alternative is the machine being too slow to bother with.

The tradeoff is deliberate and worth understanding. The removed components do not come back easily, so this is a build for a machine with a defined job rather than a general purpose computer that might need anything later. The Store, some of the recovery tooling, and several optional features are gone by design, and adding them back is more trouble than reinstalling the standard image.

Underneath the trimming it is the final 22H2 release, so the core is settled and stable. The image is bootable, writes to a USB stick with any imaging tool, and the activation step is applied so the desktop is ready to use once it loads.

Installation

How to install it

Write the ISO to an 8 GB or larger USB stick with a standard imaging tool.
Back up the target drive completely. A clean installation removes existing partitions on it.
Boot from the stick and choose Custom installation rather than Upgrade.
Be aware that removed components cannot easily be added back, so confirm the machine's job suits a trimmed build.
After the desktop loads, confirm the activation state in system properties.
