Windows 10 Pro Lite

A trimmed Windows 10 Professional image with the bundled applications, telemetry components, and background services stripped out, aimed at older machines and at anyone who wants a quiet system.

Version 22H2 Build 19045.5011 2.68 GB Bootable ISO (64-bit) Updated 1 week ago

Overview

What this release is

A stock Windows 10 install arrives carrying a great deal that most people never open, and on an older machine the difference between that and a trimmed install is the difference between usable and not. This image removes the bundled applications, the advertising and content delivery components, the telemetry services, and the assorted background tasks, and what remains starts faster and stays out of the way.

The removals were chosen with some care rather than by stripping everything reachable. Windows Update still works, the licensing service is intact, printing works, the store components can be restored if something later needs them, and the recovery environment is present. A lite image that cannot receive security updates is not worth installing, so that was the line drawn.

The memory footprint on an idle desktop is roughly half what a stock install shows, which is the number that matters on a machine with four gigabytes. Disk use after install is around eleven gigabytes rather than the usual twenty odd, which matters on the small solid state drives that older laptops shipped with.

There are several configurations on the image. The full lite build keeps everything useful and removes the noise. The compact build goes further, removing the store framework and the remaining bundled components for machines that will only ever run desktop applications. The choice is made from the setup menu at install time.

The image is licensed on first boot and the setup routine is otherwise unmodified, so custom partitioning, driver injection during setup, and repair installs all behave normally.

Feature set

What you get

Half the idle footprint

Around half the memory use of a stock install on an idle desktop, which is decisive on a four gigabyte machine.

Bundled applications removed

The preinstalled application set, advertising components, and content delivery services are gone rather than hidden.

Updates preserved

Windows Update, the licensing service, and the recovery environment are all intact and working.

Smaller disk use

Roughly eleven gigabytes after installation instead of the usual twenty something.

Several configurations

A balanced lite build and a more aggressive compact build, chosen from the setup menu at install time.

Standard setup

Custom partitioning, driver injection, and repair installs behave exactly as they do with a stock image.

Changes in this build

What changed

  • Rebuilt on the current 22H2 servicing baseline with cumulative updates folded in
  • Additional background tasks removed after testing showed no effect on update delivery
  • Storage and network drivers added for recent hardware so setup sees every disk and adapter
  • Compact configuration reworked so the store framework can still be restored later if needed
  • Fixed the missing audio device on certain laptop chipsets after installation

Installation

How to install it

  1. Write the image to a USB stick of 8 GB or larger with a tool that supports UEFI and legacy boot.
  2. Boot from the stick and pick the configuration you want from the first menu.
  3. Choose Custom rather than Upgrade, since a lite image should always go onto a clean partition.
  4. Stay offline through setup, which is faster and avoids the account requirement.
  5. Install chipset and graphics drivers first once the desktop appears, before anything else.

Questions

Before you start

Does Windows Update still work?

Yes. Cumulative and security updates install normally, which was the constraint the removals were built around.

Can the removed applications be reinstalled?

In the lite configuration, yes, since the framework is still there. In the compact configuration some of them cannot come back.

Is it suitable as a main system?

For desktop application use, yes. If you rely on the bundled applications or on store distributed software, use the standard image instead.

Why is the image so much smaller?

The removed components are taken out of the install source rather than uninstalled afterwards, so they never occupy space at all.
