Overview

What this release is

Acrobat Pro is still the only application that treats a PDF as a real document rather than a picture of one. Text can be edited in place with reflow, paragraphs can be moved between pages, and images inside the file can be replaced without exporting to another program and back. Everything else in the category approximates this behaviour, and the approximation shows on complex layouts.

The conversion engine is the second reason to keep it around. Exports to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint preserve structure, tables survive intact far more often than with any competing tool, and the OCR step recognises scanned pages in more than twenty languages, producing selectable text over the original scan rather than a substitution.

Redaction here is genuine removal, not a black rectangle drawn on top. Marked content is deleted from the underlying file along with the associated metadata, which is why this application remains standard in legal and compliance environments where a drawn box would be a serious problem.

Form tools round out the package. Existing documents can be scanned for form fields automatically, fields can be typed and validated, and responses can be collected into a spreadsheet without any server component.

Installation

How to install it

Uninstall Adobe Reader first. The two share components and the older one interferes with setup.
Extract the archive to a short path and run setup as administrator.
Choose the language on the first screen, then let the installation complete.
Do not open the program until the included registration step has been applied.
On first launch, decline the sign in prompt and set Acrobat as the default PDF handler when asked.
