Overview

What this release is

Office 2021 is the sensible middle ground between the aging 2019 release and a subscription. It brings the dynamic array engine to Excel, which is the single biggest change to how spreadsheets are written in twenty years, while keeping the perpetual licence model that means nothing expires and nothing needs renewing.

The Excel additions are the reason to choose this over 2019. Formulas can spill results across a range, XLOOKUP replaces the awkward combinations that came before it, and functions like FILTER, SORT, and UNIQUE remove a great deal of helper column work. Once you have written a few sheets this way, going back is painful.

The rest of the suite is a steady evolution. Word gained better co-authoring and improved change tracking, PowerPoint added recording tools with presenter capture, and Outlook received search improvements that make large mailboxes usable again. The interface received the rounded visual refresh that matches Windows 11 without moving anything important.

Both 32-bit and 64-bit builds are included, along with the full Professional Plus application set. The installation runs entirely from the local package.

Installation

How to install it

Uninstall any existing Office installation, including preinstalled trials.

Is this better than the 2019 release?

For Excel work, clearly. Dynamic arrays and XLOOKUP change how sheets are written. Elsewhere the difference is smaller.

Can it run alongside 2019?

No. The two Click-to-Run installations conflict and only one will survive.

Does Teams install with it?

No. This package contains the classic desktop applications only.

Are security updates still delivered?

Yes, through the normal Office update channel for the perpetual release.
