Overview

What this release is

There is a specific problem this solves better than anything else. You need your own working environment, with your own applications and settings, on a machine that is not yours and that you must not modify. Installing a full Windows onto a fast USB drive gives you exactly that. Plug in, boot from it, and the host machine sits untouched on its own disk.

Setting it up by hand is possible and unpleasant. The boot configuration, the driver handling for unknown hardware, and the storage layout all have to be right or the drive boots on one machine and hangs on the next. This program handles all of it from an image file, an existing installation, or a running system, and produces media that boots across different hardware rather than only on the machine that made it.

It also covers the adjacent jobs. Ordinary installation media can be written from the same window, an existing installation can be cloned to another drive for migration, and a portable environment can be built onto an external solid state drive rather than a stick, which is what anyone using this seriously should do.

The Technician configuration unlocks everything, including the legacy and modern boot modes together on one drive, encryption of the portable installation, unlimited creation for deployment work, and the ability to build media from every edition of the operating system rather than a restricted subset.

Installation

How to install it

Extract the archive and run setup as administrator, since raw disk access is required throughout.
Apply the included activation step and choose the Technician configuration.
Use an external solid state drive rather than a memory stick. A slow stick makes the result unusable.
Back up the target drive first, because creating the installation erases it completely.
Test the finished drive on a second machine before relying on it for anything important.

Before you start

Will a portable installation boot on any machine?

On most, thanks to the hardware independent mode. Machines with unusual storage controllers may still need a driver injected first.

Is a memory stick good enough?

Technically yes, practically no. Use an external solid state drive or the experience is painfully slow.

Does the host machine get modified?

No. The system runs entirely from the external drive and the internal disk is left alone.

What does the Technician configuration add?
