Hotspot Shield VPN

A connection tunnelling client with a large server list, running at the paid tier so the bandwidth cap, the location restrictions, and the advert stream are gone.

Version 12.15.1 84 MB Windows 7 / 8 / 10 / 11 (64-bit) Updated 2 days ago

Overview

What this release is

The client does the usual job of routing traffic through a remote server so the connection appears to originate somewhere else. What separates the paid tier from the free one is not the feature list but the limits, and this build removes the daily bandwidth cap, opens the full server list, and stops the advert panel that occupies half the free interface.

The transport protocol is the part worth knowing about. It uses a custom protocol rather than one of the common open ones, which is why it tends to work on networks where the usual ports are filtered. Speeds on nearby servers are generally good enough that video streaming does not suffer, which is the practical test most people apply.

The client itself is deliberately simple. One large connect button, a server list sorted by location and load, and a small set of preferences for autostart, protocol selection, and the kill switch that blocks traffic entirely if the tunnel drops rather than quietly falling back to the open connection.

Split tunnelling is included at this tier, which lets specific applications bypass the tunnel while everything else routes through it. That matters for anything that misbehaves when its apparent location changes, and it saves constantly toggling the connection on and off.

Feature set

What you get

No bandwidth cap

The daily transfer limit applied at the free tier is removed entirely.

Full server list

Every location is selectable rather than being restricted to a small default set.

Custom protocol

A proprietary transport that tends to connect on networks where common ports are filtered.

Kill switch

Blocks all traffic if the tunnel drops rather than silently reverting to the open connection.

Split tunnelling

Route specific applications outside the tunnel while everything else goes through it.

No advert panel

The promotional area that fills the free client is absent at this tier.

Changes in this build

What changed

  • Rebuilt connection handling with faster reconnects after a network change
  • Additional server locations added across several regions
  • Split tunnelling rules now survive an application update
  • Reduced idle memory use for the background service
  • Fixed the kill switch that failed to release after a clean disconnect

Installation

How to install it

  1. Remove any other tunnelling client first. Two virtual adapters will conflict over routing.
  2. Extract the archive to any convenient folder and run setup as administrator.
  3. Allow the virtual network adapter when Windows prompts for it during installation.
  4. Apply the included licensing step before the first connection.
  5. Open the client and confirm the full server list is selectable rather than partly locked.

Questions

Before you start

Does the tier state survive a client update?

A major version update usually replaces the licensing components. Reapply the included step afterwards.

Why is a distant server slower?

Distance adds latency and every intermediate hop costs throughput. Pick the nearest location that suits your purpose.

Does the kill switch work at startup?

Yes, if it is enabled in preferences. Traffic stays blocked until the tunnel is established.

Can it run alongside a corporate network client?

Not reliably. Two clients competing for the routing table produce unpredictable results.
