Microsoft Edge Stable

The current stable browser build packaged as a standalone offline installer, with the promotional panels and the first run tour stripped so it opens on a blank page instead of a sales pitch.

Version 151.0.4129.72 168 MB Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) Updated 2 days ago

Overview

What this release is

Underneath the branding this is the same rendering engine that most of the web is tested against, which means sites behave, extensions from the usual store install without complaint, and developer tooling is identical to what everyone else is using. The parts worth having are the ones Microsoft added on top rather than the ones it took from elsewhere.

Vertical tabs are the standout. Once a session goes past twenty tabs the horizontal strip stops being usable, and the vertical panel with collapsible groups turns a mess into something navigable. Sleeping tabs cut memory use sharply on long sessions, and the built in reader mode with read aloud is genuinely good rather than a checkbox feature.

What people complain about is everything bolted around the edges. The shopping panel, the news feed on the new tab page, the sidebar promotions, and the periodic prompts to make it the default are all removed in this package, along with the first run tour that hijacks the first launch.

This is the full offline installer rather than the small web stub, so it can be deployed on a machine with no connection and it will not silently pull a different build during setup. The update mechanism is left in place but set to manual, so nothing changes underneath you.

Feature set

What you get

Vertical tabs

A collapsible side panel with grouping that makes a session of fifty tabs navigable rather than unreadable.

Sleeping tabs

Background tabs release memory after an idle period and restore instantly when clicked.

Offline installer

Full standalone package that installs without a connection and never swaps in a different build mid setup.

Promotional panels removed

Shopping panel, news feed, sidebar promotions, and the default browser prompts stripped from the package.

Reader mode

Strips a page to text with adjustable spacing and a read aloud voice that handles long articles well.

Extension support

Installs extensions from both the vendor store and the wider Chromium ecosystem without a compatibility layer.

Changes in this build

What changed

  • Repackaged at the current stable release level
  • New tab page defaults to blank with the feed components removed
  • First run tour and default browser prompts stripped from the installer
  • Reduced memory use on sessions holding more than a hundred tabs
  • Fixed the profile corruption that appeared after an interrupted update

Installation

How to install it

  1. Close any running browser instance and end its background tasks before installing.
  2. Extract the archive and run the installer as administrator.
  3. Set the update policy to manual on first launch if you want the cleaned build to persist.
  4. Import bookmarks and passwords from the previous browser through the settings panel rather than during the first run.
  5. Set the new tab page manually, since a fresh profile still points at the default page.

Questions

Before you start

Can it replace the version that ships with Windows?

Yes. It installs over the existing one and keeps the profile, so bookmarks and history survive.

Will it update itself back to the stock build?

Only if the update service is left on automatic. Set it to manual after installing.

Do Chrome extensions work?

Yes. The engine is the same, and the wider extension ecosystem installs after allowing stores from other sources.

Is this the offline installer?

Yes. The whole browser is in the package rather than a small stub that downloads during setup.
