Overview

What this release is

Office 2007 is the version that changed how the suite looks. The ribbon replaced the menu and toolbar arrangement that had been in place since the early nineties, and while the transition was unpopular at the time, every version since has kept it. Anyone who learned the suite after this release has never used anything else.

It also introduced the XML based file formats, the docx, xlsx, and pptx extensions that are still the default today. Files created here open in current versions without conversion, which is the main reason the release remains genuinely usable rather than only nostalgic.

The practical case for installing it is old hardware. It runs comfortably on machines with a single gigabyte of memory and a processor from the same era, where a current release would crawl or refuse to install at all. For a secondary machine doing letters, spreadsheets, and the occasional presentation it is entirely adequate.
