Overview

What this release is

Microsoft Toolkit is one of the oldest tools of its kind still in circulation, and it survived by being more than a single button. It carries separate modules for Windows and for the Office suites, each with an automatic mode for people who want it done and a set of manual tabs for people who want to see and control every step.

The manual side is what distinguishes it. Product key installation and removal, licensing status queries, channel switching between retail and volume, service management, backup and restore of the current licensing state, and a token repair function for the situation where the store has been corrupted by a failed update or a badly written cleanup tool.

The Office module goes further than licensing alone. It can perform a customised installation of the suite from an existing source, choosing which applications go on and which are left off, which is genuinely useful when you want the word processor and the spreadsheet without the database and the mail client dragged along with them.

Everything is logged in detail in an information tab that stays visible while the tool works, so there is never a moment where something is happening and you cannot see what. When a step fails, the log says which one and why, which is far more than most tools in this space offer.

It runs from a single executable with no installation, requires the desktop framework that Windows already carries, and leaves nothing behind unless you deliberately create a renewal task from the tools tab.

Installation

How to install it

Extract the archive to a folder outside the system directories.
Add that folder to your antivirus exclusions before extracting, since tools of this type are flagged by category.
Right click the executable and run it as administrator.
Pick the module for Windows or for Office using the icons at the bottom right of the window.
Use the backup function on the licensing tab before making any change, so the previous state can be restored.

Before you start

What is the difference between the two modules?

One handles Windows and the other handles the Office suites. They share an interface but operate on entirely separate systems.

Can it repair a broken licensing store?

Yes, through the token repair function, which is often the fix when nothing else will apply successfully.

Does it install anything permanently?

Only if you create a renewal task from the tools tab. Otherwise it runs and exits without leaving anything behind.

Why does it refuse to start?

Almost always the desktop framework being missing or unregistered. Enable it through Windows features and try again.
