Overview
What this release is
Almost every consumer board built in the last fifteen years uses a Realtek audio codec, which makes this the single most widely needed driver package there is. The generic driver Windows installs by itself will produce sound, but it leaves out most of what the hardware can do, and it is usually why a front panel jack does nothing or why the microphone sounds distant and thin.
This package covers the whole codec family in one download rather than making you find the exact model on a board manufacturer page that stopped being updated years ago. Setup detects what is present and installs the right driver, along with the control panel that the board manufacturer frequently omits from their own package.
That control panel is the part worth having. Jack retasking so a port can be reassigned when the physical layout does not match what the board expects, front panel detection settings that fix the dead headphone socket problem, per output volume, multi stream so different applications can play to different outputs at once, and the speaker configuration for anything beyond a stereo pair.
The microphone side includes noise suppression, acoustic echo cancellation, and beam forming on boards with multiple capsules, all of which are handled by the codec rather than by software, so they cost nothing in processor time and work in every application including ones with no audio settings of their own.
Both architectures are included along with the older driver branch for machines that predate the current one, so a system that the current package refuses to install on is usually covered by the legacy build on the same image.

Installation
How to install it
- Uninstall the existing audio driver through device manager and tick the box to remove its software.
- Restart before installing, since the old driver holds the device until the machine has rebooted.
- Extract the archive and run the setup executable as administrator.
- Restart again when setup asks. The control panel will not appear correctly until you do.
- Open the control panel and set the front panel detection option if a headphone socket is not working.

Before you start
How do I know if my board uses one of these codecs?
Open device manager and look at the audio device name. If it does not say Realtek, this package will not help.
Is the control panel included?
Yes, which is the usual reason to install this rather than whatever the board manufacturer offers.
Why does my front headphone socket do nothing?
Front panel detection is usually set wrong. Turn the detection option off in the control panel and the socket generally comes back.
Which build should I use on an old machine?
Try the current one first. If setup refuses to run, use the legacy branch included on the same image.
