Telegram Desktop

The desktop client for one of the largest messaging networks in use, with unlimited file transfer sizes, cloud stored history, and folder organisation that survives a very large contact list.

Version 7.0.9 84.2 MB Windows 7 / 8 / 10 / 11 (64-bit) Updated 2 days ago

Overview

What this release is

Telegram Desktop is a native client rather than a browser window pretending to be one, and the difference is obvious in memory use, in startup time, and in how it behaves when a conversation has fifty thousand messages in it. Search across an entire history returns results instantly, and scrolling back years does not stall.

The feature that keeps people on this network rather than the alternatives is the file handling. Individual transfers run to sizes no competing messenger permits, files stay in the cloud rather than expiring, and the desktop client streams video and audio attachments while they download instead of waiting for completion. For anyone who moves large files between their own machines regularly, this alone is the reason.

History lives in the cloud and syncs across every device signed in, so the desktop client is not a mirror of a phone session but a full participant. Log in on a new machine and the entire history arrives, searchable, without any export or transfer step. The saved messages area functions as a personal cloud store with no size ceiling worth mentioning.

Organisation scales properly. Chat folders sort conversations by rule, so work, personal, and the noisy group chats can be separated without muting anything. Groups run to very large member counts with proper moderation tooling, and channels broadcast to unlimited subscribers. Bots extend the client with automation that runs inside conversations.

This build is the standard desktop client, unmodified, packaged with a portable option for running from a removable drive without installing anything on the host machine.

Feature set

What you get

Large file transfer

Send individual files far larger than any competing messenger allows, with no expiry on stored attachments.

Cloud history

Full message history synced across every signed in device, searchable instantly on a new machine.

Streaming attachments

Video and audio attachments play while downloading rather than after the transfer completes.

Chat folders

Rule based organisation that keeps a very large conversation list navigable without muting anything.

Groups and channels

Very large group membership with moderation tooling, and channel broadcast without a subscriber ceiling.

Portable mode

Runs from a removable drive with its data alongside it, leaving nothing on the host machine.

Changes in this build

What changed

  • Reduced memory use when many media heavy conversations are open
  • Improved search with filtering by sender and attachment type
  • Better handling of animated stickers on hardware without acceleration
  • Fixed the notification duplication that occurred with multiple accounts signed in

Questions

Before you start

Does the desktop client need a phone connected?

Only for the initial sign in. After that it operates independently with the full history available.

Is there a size limit on transfers?

There is a ceiling, but it is high enough that most everyday files, including long video, pass without splitting.

Does portable mode keep the history separate?

Yes. Portable mode stores everything alongside the executable and touches nothing on the host machine.

How much disk does the cache use?

As much as you allow. The cache ceiling is set in settings and old media is pruned automatically once it is reached.
