Overview

What this release is

The reason VueScan exists is straightforward. Scanner manufacturers stop writing drivers long before the hardware stops working, and a perfectly good flatbed becomes a paperweight after a Windows upgrade. This program talks to the hardware directly using its own driver set, which covers several thousand models going back decades, so a scanner that no longer has any vendor support returns to service in minutes.

For film work it is close to essential. Negative inversion is handled with a large built in database of film stocks, so a colour negative comes out with sensible colour rather than an orange cast that has to be fought manually. Infrared dust and scratch removal works on hardware that supports the channel, and multi pass scanning combines several exposures to pull detail out of dense shadow areas on slides.

The Pro edition unlocks raw scan files, which is the part serious archivists care about. A raw file preserves the sensor data before any adjustment, meaning a batch of scans can be reprocessed years later with better software without touching the originals again. Batch scanning with automatic file naming, index numbering, and multi page document assembly is all here as well.

Colour handling is far more careful than the software that ships with most scanners. IT8 calibration targets are supported for both reflective and transparency work, output profiles can be embedded per job, and the preview shows the actual corrected result rather than an approximation that shifts once the scan finishes.

Installation

How to install it

Extract the archive to any folder. The application is small and does not require a long install routine.
Run the installer as administrator so it can register its own driver layer.
Connect the scanner and power it on before first launch so the hardware is detected during the initial scan for devices.
If a vendor driver is already installed, leave it. The two coexist and you can pick either from the source list.
Skip the serial prompt on launch. The Pro feature set is already present in the output menus.

Before you start

Will it work with a scanner that has no modern driver?

That is the main use case. It carries its own driver set and reaches a great deal of hardware that Windows no longer recognises.

Are raw scan files available in this build?

Yes. The Pro output options are unlocked, so raw output and multi page raw archives are both selectable.

Does it support network and feeder scanners?

It does, including duplex feeders, though page order on some older models needs the manual setting.

Can it run alongside the manufacturer software?

Yes. Both can be installed at once and each will still see the hardware.
