Overview
What this release is
The desktop client exists for the simple reason that typing on a phone all day is tiresome when a real keyboard is sitting right there. It is a native Windows application rather than a website in a wrapper, so it opens quickly, sits in the tray, and raises a proper notification when a message arrives, and it brings the whole conversation history to the larger screen where a long exchange is far easier to read.
It links to the account on the phone and keeps in step with it. Chats, contacts, and media stay synchronised in both directions, so a conversation continued on the computer is complete on the phone afterward and the other way round. The linking is done once, and from then on the desktop client works even when the phone is switched off, holding its own connection to the service.
Beyond text it carries the features people expect. Voice and video calls run from the desktop with the computer camera and microphone, files and images are dragged straight into a chat from the desktop, and everything is protected by the same end to end encryption the mobile application uses, so the desktop is no weaker a link than the phone.
This is the standard client, free and unmodified, with the full interface language set. There is no trial and no licence layer, and it is included here so a machine can be set up with the messaging tools alongside everything else.

Installation
How to install it
- Extract the archive to any convenient location.
- Run the setup executable and let the installation complete.
- Open the program and link it to the account from the phone when prompted.
- Allow it to synchronise the history, which takes a moment on a long account.
- Set the notification and startup preferences to taste from the settings panel.

Before you start
Does the phone need to stay on?
No. After the one time linking step the desktop client holds its own connection and works with the phone switched off.
Is it a real application or a web page?
A native Windows application, which is why it opens quickly and handles notifications properly.
Are the messages still encrypted?
Yes. The desktop uses the same end to end encryption as the mobile application.
Why does the first sync take a while?
It is pulling the conversation history across. A long account takes a few minutes the first time.
