WPS Office 2020

A full document, spreadsheet, and presentation suite that opens and writes the Microsoft formats without conversion, in a package that fits in a fraction of the space the alternatives need.

Version 11.2.0.9629 241 MB Windows 7 / 8 / 10 / 11 (64-bit) Updated 4 days ago

Overview

What this release is

WPS Office is the suite people install when they need to open a colleague's document, edit it, and send it back without anyone noticing which program it passed through. Writer, Spreadsheets, and Presentation read and write the Microsoft formats directly, so a DOCX stays a DOCX, an XLSX keeps its formulas, and a PPTX keeps its transitions instead of arriving flattened.

The interface will be immediately familiar to anyone who has used a ribbon toolbar, and for those who prefer the older layout there is a classic menu mode that puts everything back where it used to be. Documents open in tabs inside a single window, which sounds like a small thing until you are cross referencing four spreadsheets at once and no longer have to hunt through the taskbar.

Compatibility goes further than the file extensions. Track changes survive a round trip, comment threads keep their authors, pivot tables recalculate correctly, and conditional formatting rules are preserved rather than baked into static cell colours. The formula library covers the several hundred functions that spreadsheet work actually uses in practice.

The suite is unusually light for what it does. The whole installation is smaller than a single component of most competing packages, it starts in a couple of seconds on modest hardware, and it runs acceptably on machines that were already old when they were bought. That combination is why it keeps a place on office machines that will never see a hardware refresh.

This build is configured with the premium features already enabled, so the PDF tools, the advanced export options, and the template library are present from first launch and the upgrade prompts that normally sit in the corner of the window are gone.

Feature set

What you get

Format compatibility

Reads and writes DOCX, XLSX, PPTX and the older binary formats natively, with track changes and comments preserved through a round trip.

Tabbed documents

Every open file lives as a tab inside one window, with drag out support when you want a document on a second screen.

PDF toolkit

Convert, merge, split, sign, and edit PDF documents from inside the suite instead of reaching for a separate program.

Classic menu mode

Switch the ribbon for the older drop down menu layout at any time, which cuts the retraining problem to nothing.

Small footprint

The complete suite installs in well under a gigabyte and opens in a couple of seconds on hardware that struggles with the alternatives.

Template library

Several thousand document, spreadsheet, and presentation templates bundled locally rather than fetched from an online gallery.

Changes in this build

What changed

  • Improved rendering of complex DOCX layouts with floating tables and text boxes
  • Faster recalculation on spreadsheets with more than one hundred thousand populated cells
  • PDF editing module rebuilt with proper text reflow across page breaks
  • Presentation mode now supports a separate presenter view on a second display
  • Fixed the font substitution that changed line spacing on documents using embedded fonts

Installation

How to install it

  1. Turn off real time protection before extracting. The configuration step touches its own files and heuristics flag it.
  2. Extract the archive to a short path such as C:\Setup.
  3. Run the setup executable as administrator and accept the default install location.
  4. Do not open the suite until the included configuration step has been applied.
  5. Launch Writer once, check that the corner of the window shows no upgrade prompt, and block outbound access if you want the state to stay put.

Questions

Before you start

Can it replace Microsoft Office entirely?

For everyday document, spreadsheet, and presentation work, yes. Very heavy macro projects and specialised add-ins are the usual exceptions.

Do macros carry across?

Basic VBA runs. Anything relying on the full Microsoft object model or a third party reference will need rewriting.

Does it install alongside Microsoft Office?

Yes. The two coexist, though you will want to decide which one owns the file associations on the setup screen.

Why is the download so much smaller than other suites?

The application is genuinely compact. Nothing has been stripped out of this package to make it smaller.
